Is there a way I can find out for free if if the vase/urn we got in antique mall is genuine ivory?
It's very very heavy, about 11.75" tall and the mouth is 7" wide. It was signed at the bottom but it's in Japanese I think. There's two japanese scene on each side.

probably not for free. do you work for free? is y our expertise in whatever you do for a living worth nothing either?? think about it...
take it to an antiquities dealer who specializes in ivory goods. did the dealer you purchased it from have any provenance on it? (that is information about where it came from, who owned it before, how they acquired it, etc) Alternatively, find out if there is a Japanese club or organization in your area, and ask (please be very polite) if someone there could translate what it says on the bottom for you.
